Event - 3B Create a Film

June 2010

During the second half of the spring term, 3B had the opportunity to take part in a Creative Partnership Project to create a film using animation, music and green screen filming.

The project was designed to fit in with the topic of 'Fashion and Music' which the children were covering as part of their International Primary Curriculum topic. This was intended to help the children to become confident in front of the camera, work together to create a film, develop their skills in speaking and listening and to give them an opportunity to write for a purpose.

The project was led by artist Mat Beckett. He began by working with the children in the classroom brainstorming ideas to see where the children would like the project to go. The children had the opportunity to create storyboards, to write scripts and to try these scripts out and then edit them.

The children were taught how to use all the various equipment and had the chance to practise using it. This is where the children could use the green screen which would be replaced by a different background using the computer later.

During the filming, the children had the chance to take various roles, e.g. camera operator, director, actor, dancer etc. Cameraman Lee O'Connell came in to help out too. Our music teacher, Mr Churchill also worked with 3B and 3A to create the music for the film.

When all the filming was completed, the children helped Mat to edit the film and make decisions as to what was included and what was left out.

Finally, a film premiere was arranged in the hall so that staff, children and parents could view the finished product. Mat also made a copy for each child to take home to share with their families.
