Event - Creative Arts Week and Carnival

29 June to 3 July 2009

We have had a really successful Creative Arts Week this year.

The week began with a launch assembly. Children from the Street dance Club performed to the rest of the school, some of the Bosnian children shared a dance that they had learnt at Bosnian School, Queensbridge Secondary School came and shared a drama performance, Year 6 Dancers performed their dance (The Charm Girls) and Mrs. Harsh invited her son Aman into school to show his 'dohl' drumming.

Throughout the week, all classes from across the school had the opportunity to work alongside a visiting artist.

Nursery children watched a puppet show performed by Clive Chandler the puppeteer about Jack and the Beanstalk and then made puppets with their parents during the week.

  • Reception: worked with Jim Millar to practice plate spinning, balancing and juggling.
  • Year 1: Worked with Jim Morris to make large scale animals out of bamboo stick and decorated them with ribbons. Look out for the huge spider in the entrance hall.
  • Year 2: Worked with Caliche to make South American music.
  • Year 3: Used a pottery wheel and then worked with a potter to make clay planters.
  • Year 4: Worked with Mrs. McGuiness to create and perform Street dance.
  • Year 5: Worked with Off Your Trolley to make carnival trolleys and costumes.
  • Year 6: Worked with Drumlove to practice drumming from Africa and the Caribbean.

At the end of the week lots of the children from school took part in Balsall Heath Carnival. They paraded the streets in their costumes and the school won first prize for the best parade entry. We now have a certificate and a shiny new trophy for the entrance hall.

What a great celebration to end a fantastic week!
