Event - Year 4 Dinosaur Dig

8 November 2012

On Thursday 8th November Year 4 took part in an amazing discovery… They found a selection of dinosaur and sea creature fossils at the Herbert Museum in Coventry!

On arrival Year 4 were split into class groups and took part, one group at a time, in learning about, and taking on the role of, palaeontologists. Each class had a talk with the museum curator about how fossils are made, and even had a chance to hold dinosaur poo! After that they were taken to a downstairs room, where each person created their own dinosaur fragment.

Year 4 also had a chance to explore the museum, visiting each room in turn, and getting hands on in the elements room, where you could actually experience weather in different climates! There were also 'feely boxes' where you could touch objects without seeing what they were first. A lot of the teachers were too scared to put their hands into the boxes! Qassim in 4R really enjoyed it ' the objects were all amazing and some were really weird.'

There were so many exciting things to do at the museum it was hard for the children to think of just one favourite part of the day. Saba in 4W said ' I enjoyed the whole day I can't think of one best bit.' Isha from 4O was amazed by the size of the dinosaur models in the museum, 'They were massive, you see them in books, but you don't realise how big they are until you see one up close!'
