Event - Houses of Parliament Visit

30 September 2009

Everyone met at the school reception area at 7.45am on Wednesday 30th September 2009. We stepped onto the coach feeling excited, however, a little tired as it was an early start.

As we approached London, we saw Baker Street and Oxford Street from the coach window and we couldn't wait to get off.

Firstly we went to The Houses of Parliament and we were shown around by a very helpful guide. We arrived in the famous lobby, where we saw breathtaking statues of past monarchs including a grand sculpture of King Henry VIII. We walked into The House of Commons and we were impressed by the green, leather seats. We were told not to sit on the seats, not even the Headteacher was allowed!

Our group followed the guide into the House of Lords. This room had red leather seats, as well as an amazing golden throne just for the queen. It was astonishing.

We were then shown to a classroom, where a friendly teacher had prepared a very fun activity for us about voting. We were split into groups and each of us represented our own political party; it was extremely enjoyable and very interesting.

Our local member of parliament, Roger Godsiff, suddenly appeared and answered all of our questions we had prepared in class. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to meet Mr Godsiff as he was very kind.

After eating our lunch, we went sight seeing in Central London. We saw Big Ben, The London Eye, Downing Street, Trafalgar Square and finally Buckingham Palace. The palace was enormous as well as beautiful with black and golden gates surrounding it. It has 775 rooms in total and none of us could ever imagine living somewhere as big as that.

Finally we got back onto the coach and we all wished we could stay in London for much longer. We returned to Birmingham and our parents were outside the school gates waiting for us.

We had a fantastic time!
