Event - Miss Bakewell in the XTerra World Triathlon Championships

23 October 2016

Clifton Primary School are delighted to announce that as of the start of this academic year they have been awarded the role of School Games Organiser Hub Site, taking over from the former Calthorpe School Sport Partnership. The school will now be responsible for organising competitive sporting opportunities across a group of over 35 Primary and Secondary Schools.

The good news does stop there however, as Year 6 teacher and key member of the PE team, Sarah Bakewell has qualified to take part in the XTerra World Triathlon Championships in Maui, Hawaii.

Clifton have appointed Robin Simpson as their School Games Organiser. Robin has a wealth of experience in school, community and regional sport and has significant national and international experience of athletics competition and coaching. He will be tasked with continuing the good work Calthorpe have done since the introduction of the original School Sport Partnerships in the late 1990s and increasing participation in Level 2 and 3 competitions as part of the National School Games Programme.

Clifton have already worked with existing schools within the Partnership to devise a calendar of events for the coming year and are keen to enhance young leadership programmes, extra-curricular activities, staff professional development and making connections with local and regional sports clubs.

After years of competing at National and European level, Miss Sarah Bakewell has qualified for the XTERRA World Championship Off-Road Triathlon in Maui, Hawaii on Sunday, October 23.

After finishing as runner up in the Europeans earlier this year, she has knuckled down to some super-serious training and will represent Great Britain (and Clifton) next week. As well as being immensely proud of this amazing achievement, Clifton Primary wish her all the best in her race next week and appreciate all her hard work in raising the profile of women's and girls' PE and school sport.

Aleesha, a member of her weekly girls running club remarked: 'I think Miss Bakewell is a fantastic athlete and she inspired me to run in school. Before I wasn't that active, but she made me want to go out and run!'
