Introduction
Clifton Primary is a large and vibrant inner city school, serving a diverse community in Balsall Heath, Birmingham.
Children attending the school mostly live in the local area which is part of the Sparkbrook Ward. The school enjoys very strong relationships with parents, families and the local community.
Clifton is very large primary school with around 900 pupils and 120 staff. We opened in 1878 and have a long and rich history. You can view some of our historical documents on our School History page.
Although we are a big school, we very much have a small family feel. We have a large safeguarding team that works hard to keep children safe and we have two family work co-ordinators who support families across the school. We open our school every Saturday, Sunday and every holiday to community groups so that children can use our great facilities; we have four main buildings, three large playgrounds, an Astroturf and a grassed area.
The organisation of the school supports and enhances our family ethos. The school is organised into four phases:
- Early Years
- Years 1 and 2 (Key Stage 1)
- Years 3 and 4 (Lower Key Stage 2)
- Years 5 and 6 (Upper Key Stage 2)
Each phase is led by an Assistant Head, supported by Raising Standards Leads for each year group. Learning Mentors are also allocated to specific children to support the behaviour and learning of individual pupils and we also have two dog mentors, Bella and Ruby who work with individual children on a weekly basis.
The school’s last Ofsted was in May 2019. The inspection team were very positive about the work of the school, the attitudes of the pupils and the support of parents and carers. The school was judged to be good overall. A copy of the full report can be accessed on the Ofsted Inspection page of this website.
The focus of everything that we do in the school is to ensure pupils at Clifton are happy, safe and learning. Good behaviour to ensure an orderly, calm learning environment is a constant focus. The curriculum is balanced to ensure a wide menu of opportunity for pupils as well as an appropriate focus on attainment in English and mathematics. We subsidise all our trips, visitors and clubs to ensure they are accessible to all and we provide a free Clifton t-shirt for every child to foster a sense of pride and belonging to our community.
You will find much more on all of these areas across the sections and pages of this website. We hope you enjoy finding out about our school as much as staff, parents, pupils and governors enjoy being part of the Clifton community.
